Learn more about Science programs at Thomas Jefferson University

Students seeking undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral degrees in areas like biology, chemistry and our vast options in the biomedical sciences such as clinical research, forensic biology, genomics immunology, neuroscience and more, can pursue their passion for discovery at Jefferson. We have a strong legacy of scientific firsts (nearly two centuries) that push the boundaries of exploration and innovation in a city known for its firsts.

Creating a Vaccine

Students team up for hands-on experience on how vaccines are made in Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing and Center City labs. They seek ways to use creativity for advancements in optimizing processes, scaling up and making gene therapy affordable, ingestible and tolerable.

Brewing Better Health

Whether you’re working in the chem or bio lab or testing materials alongside design students at the Fashion and Textiles Futures Center, you’ll learn about the science in your field and its hidden value in many others that are seemingly unrelated to your area of study. Education at Jefferson overlaps with other ways of thinking and learning.

At Jefferson, you never know what you’ll discover. Just ask Jefferson biochemistry major Madisyn Peoples, who assisted in an ongoing research project testing the antioxidant properties of cold-brewed coffee.

P4 Program

Our Postbaccalaureate Pre-Professional Program (P4) offers educational and professional development in the health professions, for academically competitive individuals with non-science undergraduate and graduate degrees—all within a supportive, collaborative and welcoming environment. But don’t let us tell you, see what our growing list of P4 alumni have to say.

CSI Meet Forensic Biology

We offer a variety of Master’s Programs that provide the skills and knowledge you need to engage in the forefront of basic, applied and translational research. Our unique program in Forensic Biology, for example, allows you time to work in a fully functioning, ISO-17025 accredited, private DNA laboratory. Instead of spending the duration of the program in a classroom, students will learn within an actual forensic laboratory because of our partnership with The Center for Forensic Science Research and Education. Engaging first-hand in a crime lab operation offers an unparalleled educational experience.

What Do Our Genes Say?

Our Genetics, Genomics & Cancer Biology PhD program provides students with the training and experience necessary to become independent scientific investigators and scholars. Genomics is a relatively new research area that uses technology advances to study the human genome. By sequencing the DNA and RNA of cancer cells and comparing them to normal tissue, scientists can identify genetic differences that may cause cancer. Jefferson’s research labs provide extensive basic equipment as well as specialized resources including facilities for cancer genomics, peptide synthesis and sequencing, cell sorting by flow cytometry, protein purification and characterization, microarray analyses and biomolecular imaging.

We offer PhD programs in biochemistry and molecular pharmacology, cell biology, genetics and genomics, immunology, neuroscience and more.
