The Division of Cardiology offers diverse, educational programs to medical students, medical residents, cardiology fellows, and practicing physicians in a variety of settings, including Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited activities. The division administers competitive ACGME-accredited fellowship programs in general cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and heart failure.
Members of the Division of Cardiology actively participate in clinical research in all disciplines of cardiology under the auspices of the Jefferson Clinical Research Institute (JCRI). The JCRI is a clinical enterprise that develops, initiates and oversees clinical research funded by industry, nonprofit organizations, and the U.S. Government. The mission of the JCRI is to provide a centralized serivce-line approach to cutting-edge, highly effective and compliant clinical research.
About the Division of Cardiology
The Division of Cardiology at Thomas Jefferson University is home to 48 full-time physicians with expertise in patient care, education, and research. The division is a core component of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Service Line, combining cardiovascular disease with cardiac surgery, vascular surgery and vascular medicine, , with a focus on the care of patients with heart and vascular disease. The Jefferson Heart Institute is the center of the division’s outpatient clinical practice, including inpatient and outpatient care, consultation, cardiovascular imaging and testing, electrophysiology, structural heart disease, and the Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center. The division offers programs in cardio-obstetrics, cardio-oncology and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, as well as a unique multidisciplinary practice for patients with cardiac amyloidosis. In addition to the Jefferson Heart Institute, located in Center City Philadelphia in the state-of-the-art Honickman Center, the Division of Cardiology operates satellite facilities in South Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia, Bala Cynwyd, PA, Voorhees, NJ and Turnersville, NJ.
In 2023, Division of Cardiology physicians performed more than 41,000 outpatient visits and cared for more than 1,500 patients admitted to the University Hospital for their cardiac care. The electrophysiology physicians oversee a growing remote monitoring program for patients with pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. The Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant Center physicians have collectively cared for more than 2,600 patients and actively participate in the care of patients with congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathies, and ventricular assist devices.
