J-1 Extensions are NOT permitted by the Department of State after a waiver has been obtained
Obtain appropriate immigration documents for the desired status (consult with OIA and your department)
Complete Form I-539 and other USCIS forms required for the new status
A change of status can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months from the time of filing. Please plan ahead and consult with OIA before proceeding.
J-1 to F-1 full-time student status
J-1's who are subject to 212(e) cannot change to the F-1 status in the United States. They must either obtain a waiver and then request the change of status, or exit the United States to obtain an F-1 visa in order to begin full-time study in a program.
