Matriculation Requirements for Accepted Students

Congratulations on your acceptance to Jefferson School of Population Health! Below is a list of ten items you need to address in order to complete the enrollment process.  If you have any questions about completing these requirements, please call the Admissions Coordinator at (215) 503-5305.  

You can use this form as a checklist to keep track of these items as you complete them.

Please note that it is very important that you complete these requirements by the specified deadline. Failure to do so can result in cancellation of your class registrations (and therefore your ability to attend class) and loss of your ability to access the Banner Web Student System and on-line Pulse course information.

1.  Log on to Jefferson email and the Pulse Portal intranet

Pulse is the official University web portal, providing access to JeffMail, Banner and JEFFLINE (the library). For a tutorial on using Pulse, go here:  http://jeffline.jefferson.edu/Education/edservices/courseinfo/.
  • The campus key is your personal identifier that allows access to information resources on campus. To access your Campus Key go to http://pulse.jefferson.edu/ (Click on the “Campus Key Lookup” under “Links” on the left hand side of the Pulse homepage.)
  • Read the enclosed JEFF/IT letter to incoming students for technical information you need to know.
As soon as you receive this letter.
 
2.  Update your permanent mailing address
  • If your address is different from the one you gave us on your application, use the Permanent Mailing online form to update your mailing address.
  • If you move while you are enrolled in a Jefferson program, please be sure to update your mailing address.

3.  Contact your advisor (in person, by email or by phone) and  determine which course(s) you will be taking.
  • This is important, because you will not be able to register for classes until you have consulted your advisor.
  • Your advisor’s name and contact information is provided in the introductory letter that accompanies this correspondence. If you need confirmation of your advisor, contact the Admissions Coordinator at 215-503-5305.
As soon as you receive this letter.
 
4. Complete prerequisite test modules;
  • Very important! Students needing to complete a prerequisite test in medical terminology, U.S. government, or macroeconomics must do so with a passing grade before they will be able to register for classes.

    Medical terminology
    : Students accepted into the Certificate or MS program in Healthcare Quality and Safety need to demonstrate basic proficiency in medical terminology.
  • If you do not have a demonstrated clinical background or have not taken a documented course in medical terminology, you should obtain a copy of Medical Terminology for Dummies by Beverly Henderson and Jennifer Dorsey, study it seriously and then take the prerequisite test in medical terminology. The test consists of 100-plus medical terms that you need to define and there is a 75-minute time limit for the test.
  • Follow these steps to complete the prerequisite test module:
    • Sign into Pulse and select the JSPH New Student course (in your My Courses tab)
    • Select the "Prerequisite Test Module" link along the left
  • Remember you will have only 75 minutes for the test.

    U.S. Government: Students accepted into the Certificate or MS program in Health Policy need to demonstrate basic familiarity with  the workings of the U.S. government.

  • If you have not taken a graduate or undergraduate course in U.S. government, you should obtain a copy of Complete Idiot's Guide to American Government by Mary Shaffrey and Melanie Fonder.  The test consists of 100-plus questions and has a time limit of 75 minutes.
  • Follow these steps to complete the prerequisite test module:
    • Sign into Pulse and select the JSPH New Student course (in your My Courses tab)
    • Select the "Prerequisite Test Module" link along the left
    • Remember you will have only 75 minutes for the test.

    Macroeconomics: Students accepted into the Certificate or MS program in Health Policy need to demonstrate basic familiarity with macroeconomics.
  • If you have not taken a graduate or undergraduate course in macroeconomics, you should obtain a copy of Complete Idiot's Guide to Economics by Tom Gorman, study it seriously and then take the test in macroeconomics.  The test consists of 100-plus questions and has a time limit of 75 minutes.
  • Follow these steps to complete the prerequisite test module:
    • Sign into Pulse and select the JSPH New Student course (in your My Courses tab)
    • Select the "Prerequisite Test Module" link along the left
    • Remember you will have only 75 minutes for the test.
As soon as possible, but at least one week before the orientation date.
 
5.  Register for course(s).
  • Be sure to check in with your advisor before registering for classes
  • Log into Pulse
  • Click on Banner tab at top of page
  • Click on Banner Tutorial
  • Click on Banner Web Demo for Students
  • Click on Student Services and Financial aid and follow links for  Registration
As soon as possible, but at least one week before the orientation date.
 
6.   Pay your tuition and fees
  • Once you have registered for classes, you can pay your bill.
    • Log into Pulse
    • Click on Banner tab at top of page
    • Click on Student Account
    • Click on Statement and Payment History
    • Click on Account Summary
  • You may pay your bill by electronic check or credit card.
First day of class.
 
7.   Confirm Attendance at  Orientation
  • The Orientation schedule accompanies this correspondence.
  • Attendance is required. Please email us at jsph@jefferson.edu  and let us know that you will attend the Orientation.
One week before orientation.
 
8.   Complete the health insurance requirement
  • All matriculated students are required to maintain health insurance. (Dental insurance is optional.) If you do not have health insurance, you must purchase insurance through a Jefferson sponsored plan in order to complete your matriculation.
  • If you currently have health insurance, you do not need to obtain insurance through the Jefferson plan and can request a waiver.

9.   Complete the quiz for Federally Mandated HIPAA Training. First day of class.
 
10.   Complete the quiz for  Federally Mandated Safety Training First day of class.
