Thomas Jefferson University in partnership with The Center for Forensic Science Research & Education offers two unique programs — MS in Forensic Biology and MS in Forensic Toxicology — designed to position students for advancement and professional development focused in the field of forensic science.

Graduates will be qualified for employment opportunities in crime laboratories at the federal, state and local levels, private labs, military facilities, hospitals, academic centers and industry.

About the Partnership:

Gain hands-on and experiential learning at the Center for Forensic Science Research & Education, in their state-of-the-art facility in Willow Grove, PA. Practice laboratory and case-assessment skills in a working laboratory.

Both the MS in Forensic Biology and MS in Forensic Toxicology programs are designated as a Professional Science Master’s (PSM), which is a graduate/professional degree grounded in science and designed for a variety of career options in business, government or non-profit organizations.

Program Options:

Master's in Forensic Toxicology

Forensic Toxicology is the study of adverse effects of drugs and chemicals on biological systems. The Master of Science in Forensic Toxicology (MSFT) is a specialized degree program for students or practitioners who are seeking to expand their knowledge of toxicology and pharmacology. Forensic Toxicology deals with the application of toxicology to cases and issues where those adverse effects have administrative or medico-legal consequences, and where the results are likely to be used in court.

Applications of forensic toxicology include:

  • Post Mortem Toxicology: assist in establishing the cause and manner of death
  • Human Performance Toxicology: examine the effects of drug and alcohol use on behavior
  • Forensic Workplace Drug Testing: identify drug use by employees

Master's in Forensic Biology

Forensic Biology is the study of biological fluids and tissues for the purposes of identification and individualization via serological and genetic analysis.

The Master of Science (MS) in Forensic Biology is a specialized professional degree for students or existing practitioners who want to further their training. This interdisciplinary graduate degree blends proficiency in key scientific principles with management and professional skills to prepare scientists for leadership positions in business, government, and non-profit agencies.

  • Serological testing involves the identification of biological fluids such as blood, semen, and saliva from physical items of evidence.
  • Genetic testing involves the individualization of a stain through molecular techniques.
  • Emerging technologies that involve next-generation sequencing, assay design, and genotyping applicable to forensics, medical, and other related fields.

Our specialized program will provide students with expertise in all areas of forensic biology, including:

  • Serological Identification of Biological Fluids & Tissues
  • Forensic DNA Analysis & Interpretation
  • Molecular Biology & Genetics
