Introduction
This Privacy Policy provides notice of our practices related to personal data processed by Thomas Jefferson University (together “TJU,” “us,” “our,” or “we”), which is collected through our websites (the “Websites”), our mobile applications (the “Apps”), and in-person (collectively, the “Services”).
This Privacy Policy does not apply to our processing of personal data in the employment or business context. This Privacy Policy does not apply to other online services that we control and maintain, but do not link to this Privacy Policy. We may provide you additional privacy notices at the point of collection of your personal data, which supplement this Privacy Policy.
We may change this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make changes, we will notify you by revising the “Last Updated” date at the top of this Privacy Policy.
Personal Data Collected
Personal data is any information that is linkable to an identifiable person. The personal data we collect about you may vary depending on the nature of your interactions with us. For example, the personal data we collect from students and student applicants is different than from non-students that purchase from our bookstore. Below are the categories of personal data we collect.
- Contact Information. This includes names, email addresses, mailing address, and phone numbers.
- Account Information. This includes information related to your registered account, if available through the Services.
- Payment Information. You may provide certain payment information, such as credit or debit card details and billing address information.
- Demographics. This includes age, gender, nationality or citizenship, and race or ethnic origin.
- Internet Activity. This includes Internet Protocol address, device identifiers, mobile network, operating system details, language preferences, referring URLs, length of visits, traffic data, pages viewed, and information regarding interactions with the Websites or Apps.
- Geolocation Data. This includes approximate location or precise geolocation, which may be based on your ZIP code or IP address.
- Audio and Visual information. This includes audio recordings of customer service calls and video recordings of student applicant interviews.
- Education-Related Information. This includes information in a student application such as education history, skills, and certifications.
- Professional or Employment-Related Information. This includes your job title, employer, and other professional background information.
Depending on your device or apps permission settings, which may impact the features and functionality of the Apps, the Apps may access certain device features and collect the following information from your device: calendar events; contacts; location (approximate and precise); phone (to directly call phone numbers); photos/media/files (to upload media); camera (to take pictures and video); microphone (to record audio).
Cookies & Similar Technologies
We and our vendors may use cookies, beacons, pixels, APIs, SDKs, and other similar technologies, that collect certain information whenever you interact with the Services, such as device identifiers, your IP address, location, other unique identifier, all of the areas within the Services that you visit, and the length and time of the visit.
Depending on the technology, these technologies, among other purposes, support the core operations of the Services; improve the performance and latency of the Services; enable certain functionalities on the Services; provide analytics; and help with marketing efforts, including targeted advertising.
Through the use of these technologies, we or external parties may collect information about your online activities over time and across different online services and we or external parties may combine certain information with other information about you.
Depending on your web browser, you may be able to set your browser to refuse cookies from the Websites. Please note that the Websites are not designed to respond to “do not track” signals.
You may be able to use mobile device settings to limit mobile tracking technologies and associated activities. For instance, you can adjust or reset the advertising identifiers on your mobile device in the device settings. iOS users can visit Settings > Privacy > Advertising > Reset Advertising Identifier. Android users can visit Google settings > Ads > Reset advertising ID.
Additionally, the Network Advertising Initiative and the Digital Advertising Alliance offer means to opt-out of certain advertising cookies through browsers and mobile apps.
We are not responsible for the effectiveness of, or compliance with, external-parties’ opt-out options or programs or the accuracy of their statements regarding their programs.
Depending on your location, we may also provide you certain choices related to these technologies. Note that making choices that disable these technologies may affect your experience on the Services and across the internet, including the expected functionality of certain features.
How We Use & Disclose Personal Data
We use personal data for the following reasons:
- Provide Services You Request, including by maintaining or servicing your account; operating and maintaining our online and offline goods and services; giving you information about our Services; processing your payments and orders; communicating with you about our Services; and responding to your requests and questions.
- Security and Integrity, including protecting our Services from cyber risks; preventing, identifying, investigating, and responding to fraud, illegal or malicious activities, and other liabilities; enforcing our policies and terms; protecting our rights; and generally providing you with a secure experience when using our Services.
- Quality, Safety, and Internal Research, including evaluating how our Services perform; repairing or improving the quality of our Services; tracking and responding to quality and security issues; and developing new or enhanced products and service offerings.
- Advertising and Marketing, including measuring the use of our Services and effectiveness of our advertising and marketing; and uncovering insights to improve our Services and provide our users with enhanced features and functionalities, such as personalized experiences.
The personal data we collect about you may be disclosed to, and used by, our subsidiaries. We also disclose personal data to our vendors, including those who collect, manage, and analyze our customer information and perform services for us, such as sending promotional communications and improving the performance of our Services.
We may also disclose personal data for the following purposes:
- Co-Branded Services. From time to time, we may enter into an arrangement with another company that is not owned by or affiliated with us to provide additional features on the Website and Apps. These arrangements may include business partners, sponsors, and co-branded online services (referred to here as “co-branded services”). Any information, including personal data, that you provide on one of these co-branded services may be shared with these partners. By participating in activities or providing your information on these co-branded services, you direct us to provide your information to those partners. Separate privacy policies may apply to these partners’ uses of your personal data.
- Business Transactions. In the event of a business transaction, we may disclose personal data to prospective or actual purchasers, investors, or successor entities in connection with a contemplated reorganization or an actual reorganization of our business, in connection with financing, a sale, or other transactions involving the disposal of all or part of our business or assets, including for the purpose of permitting the due diligence required to decide whether to proceed with a transaction, pursuant to assurances of sufficient data handling practices and safeguards.
- Legal Compliance. We may also disclose personal data for legal compliance, and law enforcement or public safety purposes. For example, to law enforcement, government or regulatory bodies, or other authorized parties in order to comply with laws, regulations, court orders, or other legal obligations or to assist in an investigation, to protect and defend our rights and property, or the rights or safety of other parties, to enforce our terms, this Privacy Policy, or agreements with third parties, or for crime-prevention purposes.
We may combine your personal data with data we obtain from our Services, other users, or third parties. We reserve the right to convert, or permit others to convert, your personal data into deidentified, anonymized, or aggregated data, as permitted by law.
Other Online Services
The Services may contain links to, or features facilitated by, other online services provided by external parties. Your use of these interactive features is voluntary, and we may retain the information that you submit through these features. For example, we may offer an interactive customer service chat feature. When you participate in the interactive chat, the contents of the chat may be captured and kept as a transcript. Certain interactive features may allow you to share content to your social media profile.
This Privacy Policy does not apply to the practices of companies that we do not own or control. We provide external links and interactive features for your convenience. When visiting an external online service or submitting information through an interactive feature provided by a vendor, you are subject to external party’s privacy practices.
Your Choices
If you have a registered account on the Services, depending on the account and your interactions with us, you may be able to change certain privacy preferences as well as update your personal data through your account settings.
Data Security
We maintain appropriate administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to help protect personal data collected or received through the Services. Although we use reasonable efforts to safeguard information, transmission via the Internet is not completely secure and we cannot guarantee the security of your information collected through the Services.
New Jersey Privacy Rights
If you are a New Jersey resident, you have certain rights related to your personal data. We will comply with your request as soon as reasonably practicable, subject to legal requirements. Requests to exercise your rights may be granted in whole, in part, or not at all, depending on the scope and nature of the request and applicable law.
To prevent unauthorized requests related to your personal data, we take steps to verify that you are the person that is the subject of the request. Following verification of your identity, we will process your request; if we are unable or decline to fulfill your request, we will let you know why. If your request is declined, you may submit an appeals request.

- Right to Confirm or Access: You have the right to confirm that we process your personal data and to access your personal data. You also have the right to obtain your personal data in a transportable format.
- Right to Correct: You may request that we correct personal data that we maintain about you if you believe such personal data is inaccurate, taking into account the nature of the information and purposes of processing the information.
- Right to Request Deletion: You may request that we delete your personal data. Please note that we may retain certain personal data as permitted by applicable law.
- Opt-Out Rights: You may request to opt out of our processing of your personal data for targeted advertising purposes. You may also designate an authorized agent to make this request for you, subject to our verification process. However, because we process your personal data for targeted advertising purposes through our use of Cookies, you may also exercise this right directly by clicking on the “Cookie Preferences” link at the footer of the Website, which will allow you to access the Cookie Manager Tool.
You may use external-party platforms, technologies, or mechanisms to indicate your opt out preferences, such as a browser or device setting, extension, or signal. Please note that we do not control these external-party tools, and you may need to enable these tools across browsers, devices, or other methods of accessing the Website.
Additional Information for Those Located Outside of the United States
If you are located outside the United States, you acknowledge that your personal data will be processed in the United States or in other jurisdictions, which may have data protection laws and regulations that are different from the laws in your country of residence.
