Article Processing Charges Waived: More Open Access Publishing Options for Jefferson Authors

Jefferson authors can now publish in many hybrid and open-access journals without paying fees, thanks to a growing number of agreements between Jefferson Libraries and publishers.

Eligibility to qualify for participation in these agreements is based on the institutional affiliation of the corresponding author. In nearly all of Jefferson’s agreements, the corresponding author’s email address must be their Jefferson email (@jefferson.edu or @students.jefferson.edu). Other research and academic institutions likely will have agreements with different publishers than Jefferson does. When working with colleagues from other institutions, have a conversation about who has access to which transformative agreements, it might change who is the corresponding author.

The growing list of publishers includes Wiley and the American Chemical Society, and recent additions Springer-Palgrave-Adis, Microbiology Society, and Company of Biologists. Jefferson’s participation with Springer-Palgrave-Adis is made through the Libraries’ membership in the Lyrasis consortium.

Formally known as Transformative or Read-Write Agreements, these arrangements offer Jefferson authors more opportunities to publish in open access journals with funding support.  Jefferson Libraries has saved the enterprise an estimated $66,000 in Article Processing Charges, thanks to these Transformative Agreements.

What Jefferson Authors Are Saying

The Wiley Transformative Agreement [accessible via Jefferson Libraries] allowed us to publish our articles in peer-reviewed journals and extend our audience through open access without additional charges to the authors. This dramatically increases our impact on patients and clinicians around the world.

I was surprised and very glad that I was able to have an open access option to publish and that my institution was paying for it. It was an easy process; with a click of a button, I could check my eligibility.
