This project Identifies and develops the programmatic and spatial requirements for psychiatric hospitals in Malawi. The most important elements are the ones that limit the risk of harm for patients and staff and the best way to do this is with a centrally located nurse’s station providing views of all patient’s activity. Outdoor space is also important for a patient’s mental health and staff satisfaction, this program includes a central courtyard that every room has access to. This project thoroughly considers many more programmatic design elements that blend indoor and outdoor spaces showing that careful design and compassionate care can positively impact a patient's psychiatric well-being.
