Meet Our Faculty: Nicole “Nikki” Lemire-Garlic, JD, PhD
Nikki is a visiting assistant professor in the Communication and Media Studies program.
Briefly describe what you do here at Jefferson.
At Jefferson I’m involved with research communication and self-advocacy, including the transmission and reception of justice-related information online, as well as digital methods. A recent publication I worked on explored YouTube comments in Black Lives Matter videos using a digital text scaling tool: Text Mining YouTube Comment Data with Wordfish in R.
How long have you been at Jefferson?
I’m brand new!
What is the best part of your job?
Helping students learn new concepts and to think critically about the role of media in society.
What’s one piece of advice you give students?
In the words of Nelson Mandela: “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you?
Before teaching at Jefferson, I was a patient! About a year-and-a-half ago, I was taken to the Jefferson emergency room with a severe migraine. That same day, doctors identified a brain aneurysm and I was successfully treated by Jefferson neurosurgeons. My story represents the important, life saving work that Jefferson performs everday.
