Biography
Marie Ann Marino, EdD, RN, FAAN was named Dean of Jefferson College of Nursing, on June 1, 2018. She is a key driver on several academic-practice partnerships aimed at innovating care management, facilitating interprofessional collaborative practice and improving health outcomes for older adults aging in place. In 2017, she was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and serves as Co-Chair appointee for their Expert Panel on Violence.
Her scholarly interests are in utilization of team-based models of healthcare that directly impact policy and improve outcomes in multiple populations. She utilizes multidisciplinary teamwork and innovative partnerships to develop, implement and evaluate team-based models that decrease disparities, improve access to care and directly address determinants of health. An advocate for the essential and principal role nurses play in leading multidisciplinary teams, she has developed and disseminated toolkits that validate the importance of nurse-led teams in improving healthcare outcomes for vulnerable individuals, families and populations across settings. Her work in development, implementation and evaluation of these multidisciplinary partnerships was nationally recognized by AACN’s Exemplary Academic-Practice Partnership Award in 2015.
Her program of research focuses on determinants of health affecting community-dwelling elders. She serves as PI on a HRSA-funded grant that developed and implemented a novel, nurse-led, multidisciplinary team-based model that increases access to preventive healthcare for vulnerable populations. This front-line, interprofessionally-disseminated model has improved outcomes for more than 900 seniors and has educated more than 300 multidisciplinary faculty and students and has been internationally disseminated across disciplines. Additionally, she collaborates with investigators from medicine/epidemiology, computer science and engineering to explore utilization of wearable sensors and digital biomarkers to improve select outcomes in community-dwelling elders.
Dr. Marino received a Bachelor of Science degree from Molloy College, a Master of Science in Nursing degree from Stony Brook University and a Doctor of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Family Violence Research at The Children’s Hospital/Harvard University School of Medicine.
For the past 28 years, Dr. Marino has maintained a clinical practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner/forensic medical examiner conducting more than 3000 medical evaluations of child victims of abuse and violence. She has provided expert testimony in more than 300 proceedings nationally. She was the first nurse appointed to the Board of Directors of the Consortium of Forensic Science Organizations and has served as President and Director-at-Large of the International Association of Forensic Nurses. Also, she contributed as an expert on the US Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women publication A National Protocol for Sexual Abuse Medical Forensic Examinations: Pediatric which is used nationwide as the standard of care by multidisciplinary agencies and health care professionals who coordinate and implement care for sexually-abused children.
