Biography

Dr. Anne Teitelman, a nurse leader in health promotion research focused on marginalized populations, joined Thomas Jefferson College of Nursing in 2022. Dr. Teitelman's research explores individual, social, and structural factors that influence health, guided by relevant theoretical frameworks. She uses qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather data and works with multidisciplinary teams. For example, in her research she elicits the views of individuals from the target audience and gathers input from Community Advisory Boards to identify pertinent intervention approaches for: the prevention of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, cancer, intimate partner violence, etc. Dr. Teitelman has led numerous studies to evaluate various health promotion interventions for feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy. She also collaborates with a team of neuroscientist and engineers to better understand brain-behavior connections as it applies to health-related decision-making.

Dr Teitelman has received multiple grant awards from NIH, foundations, and industry that have supported her program of research. In addition, she has collaborated with scholars in South Africa, Hong Kong, Thailand, Botswana, and Kenya. Dr. Teitelman has presented and published widely in the U.S. and globally. She has mentored numerous Nursing PhD.students, post-doctoral fellows, MPH students, and undergraduates in research. She has been awarded several mentoring and teaching awards.

Dr. Teitelman is an Associate Professor Emerita from the University of Pennsylvania, where she worked from 2005-2020. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and a board member of the International Council for Women's Health Issues.

Dr. Teitelman holds a PhD in nursing from the University of Michigan, a master's degree in Community Health Nursing from Yale University, and a bachelor's degree from Vassar College. She also holds national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Teitelman has practiced as a Family Nurse Practitioner for over 30 years, working in various primary care settings focused on underserved populations.
