Meet our Faculty: Wayne Bond Lau, MD

Wayne Bond Lau, MD, a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, was recently named Practitioner of the Year by Philadelphia County Medical Society. Get to know him here.

What is Dr. Lau's role at Jefferson?

  • As a clinician, I help patients in the arenas staffed by the department of emergency medicine.
  • As a volunteer and community member, I help the disadvantaged population served by the Jefferson Chinatown Clinic.
  • As a researcher, I explore modalities that may help ameliorate diabetic cardiac ischemic/reperfusion injury.
  • As a teacher, I help residents, medical students, and physician assistant students better understand the clinical scenarios present.
  • As a dean in the office of student affairs, I counsel students as they navigate the tough path of medical school.

How long has Dr. Lau been at Jefferson?

I was a Jefferson Medical College student from 2000-2004.

I was a Thomas Jefferson University Hospital emergency medicine resident thereafter, serving as Chief Resident in my senior year.

I took my first job after graduation here at Jefferson – and I have been a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine ever since.

What is the best part of his job?

Making a scared patient feel more comfortable in the chaotic emergency department. And making a worried student feel better about a stressful situation in medical school.

What’s one piece of advice he gives students?

  1. You are in a very fortunate position, to be learning the craft of medicine. If you ever feel frustration, reread your school application to feel your passion again.
  2. Medical school isn’t the time that everyone blossoms – many do so after graduation, in residency and beyond.

What’s something people would be surprised to find out about him?

I live on what used to be a farm with my family and enjoy peacefully mowing acres with my father.

In addition to the latest recognition, Dr. Lau was named Teacher of the Year by the Jefferson Physician Assistant program in 2019 and received the Physician Award for Community Service by the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 2019.
