Welcome to the academic home page for the Division of Hospital Medicine. Information for patients and the public can be found on our Clinical Home page.

The Division of Hospital Medicine is one of the largest divisions in the Department of Medicine with more than 30 faculty members and led by the Division Director, Dr. Rebecca Jaffe. We comprise nearly half of the top educators in the Department.  Our hospitalist faculty plays a leadership role in medical education, quality improvement and innovation at Thomas Jefferson University. We embrace our role in preparing compassionate and capable physicians to be leaders in a changing medical landscape and are committed to providing patient-centered, quality care to our patients.

The Division of Hospital Medicine faculty sets the standard for excellence in teaching. We hold leadership positions at the core of the Internal Medicine Residency Program with Dr. Christopher Henry, MD, serving as Program Director.  The Internal Medicine Residency Program also boasts an innovative and comprehensive Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Program, which was designed and is directed by Hospital Medicine faculty.

Dr. Rebecca Jaffe provides leadership and education as the Assistant Patient Safety Officer at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and several of our faculty members chair or participate in various hospital committees. In addition, our faculty has leadership roles in health IT and innovation at the Hospital. Dr. Jeffrey Riggio is a medical director in clinical informatics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital leading IT projects.

Clinical service in the division includes seven inpatient teaching services, two non-teaching services and medicine consultation service. The Division provides co-management services in neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedic surgery and gastroenterology.

Education

Medical Student & Residency Education

Our division’s primary aim is to prepare trainees to be leaders in a rapidly changing healthcare environment. We offer our residents rotations in general inpatient medicine, consultative medicine, oncology co-management and a dedicated Hospital Medicine elective. Residents studying at Thomas Jefferson University get a comprehensive clinical experience caring for a medically complex patient population in an urban tertiary care setting.

Our faculty has developed and implemented a novel quality improvement and safety curriculum which is a unique and critical component in resident education at the University. Because of our dedication to teaching, members of our division are consistently recognized by Internal Medicine residents among the top clinical educators at the University.

Our faculty members are leaders in bedside teaching and formal didactics, as well as innovators in curriculum development. Equally dedicated to the educational missions of the Sidney Kimmel Medical College and Internal Medicine Residency program, we help prepare medical students for practice throughout their time at Thomas Jefferson University. From the preclinical years' physical diagnosis practicum to the final years' preparatory course for internship, we are privileged to educate the next generation of physicians.

Physician Assistant Program

The Division of Hospital Medicine provides lectures in Clinical Medicine to the inaugural class of the Department of Health Science and Clinical Practice in Jefferson College of Health Professions. Didactic sessions run by faculty now provide instruction in basic scientific principles, history taking and physical examinations and diagnostic testing, as well as differential diagnosis formulation and health promotion. Faculty also participate in ward-based training for students during their medicine clinical rotations.
