Instructions for VNG/ENG Testing

When you have an appointment to have your balance and/or dizziness symptoms evaluated, there are a few procedures you will need to follow prior to the testing.

New patients should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time.  Please remember to bring your insurance identification card and referral, if needed.  Patients who have a managed care plan or HMO require this information for billing.

Medications listed below will negatively affect your test results.  Stop taking the following medications/ products 48 hours before your scheduled appointment.

  • Dizziness medications (Antivert, Meclizine, Valium, Scopolamine)
  • Sedatives (sleeping medications)
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Tranquilizers
  • Antihistamines (including allergy medications)
  • Antidepressants (Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, Celexa, Elavil)
  • Tobacco Products
  • Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Chocolate)
  • Anxiety Medications
  • Alcohol

In addition to the above list, please do not eat or drink anything for three to four hours before your scheduled appointment. Please be aware that no eye makeup or eye lash extensions are allowed. Tattoo-type eye lines must be covered by foundation.  It is also recommended that you wear loose fitting clothes (no turtlenecks) and avoid wearing wigs. 

The balance test requires approximately 2 hours to complete.   We recommend that you bring someone to accompany you.
