How You Can Help Mitigate Climate Change
For Earth Day and beyond, consider these 10 small steps to help the environment.
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are the largest contributors to global climate change, accounting for over 75% of greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of all carbon dioxide emissions.
Reducing our consumption of fossil fuels doesn’t require a major lifestyle overhaul. Just a few simple daily changes can make a difference. Check out these 10 tips:
- Walk, bike or use public transportation whenever possible.
- Cut back on meat and dairy and eat more plants and plant-based foods.
- Cook at home to reduce packaging and food waste. Plus, you will save money and eat healthier by controlling salt, sugar and fat intake.
- To further reduce food waste, plan menus before grocery shopping. Include soups, frittatas and stir-fries to use leftovers.
- Recycle, upcycle and trade clothing.
- Select slower shipping options.
- Set your thermostat a few degrees up or down, depending on the season. For each degree raised, you can save 3-5% on air conditioning costs, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.
- Conserve water by taking shorter showers and turning off the water while brushing your teeth.
- Wash full loads of clothes in cool or cold water when instructions allow. Detergents and washers clean effectively in cold water.
- Make an option for virtual meetings standard operating procedure.
