Dynamic Lighting & Health Assignment

A concept sketch and the realized light installation created by Rachel Hannah to investigate the effect of dynamic lighting on students

In the course “Immersive Art and the Health Experience,” students identified opportunities on campus to use dynamic lighting to create a calming environment. Although most studies consider the impact in hospital settings, these benefits can be implemented in other high-stress settings.

Their research found that college campuses are stressful due to large workloads and deadlines. Converting neutral communal spaces into calming experiences could help alleviate college-related stresses.

Based on research, students hypothesized that a ‘Play of Brilliance’ lighting installation that creates smoothly shifting lighting effects reminiscent of nature could help foster a calming and immersive environment for students to relieve school-related stress.

They then created a working installation using dynamic lighting, created surveys, and interviewed participants to gather feedback on the impact. Participants used positive descriptions when asked in open-ended questions how the installation made them feel.
