Health & the Art Experience:

Cross-disciplinary Teaching & Learning

The course “Health and the Art Experience” was taught by faculty from three colleges, blending design disciplines, art therapy, and clinical practice, and was attended by students from both the design programs and the medical school, working in teams and bringing a wide perspective of problem identification, solution approaches,

This course blended research and concept generation using design, art, and technology in the service of patient outcomes across diverse patient populations. Students drew from a variety of disciplines (e.g., design, art therapy, health sciences) while participating in multiple research-based experimental projects in which they designed, created, and researched art experiences that benefit patients and caregivers to ultimately improve the healthcare experience. The course was a collaboration between disciplines at both Thomas Jefferson University Center City and East Falls campuses, together with Jefferson Health, to study the impact of art on health.
