Background:
Making breakthrough medicines to fight against global pandemics like COVID-19 requires training and skills to scale up advanced manufacturing processes that can respond rapidly to global outbreaks. The biopharma industries are currently experiencing unprecedented growth and the COVID-19 pandemic has both underscored and exacerbated the need for a skilled workforce with the relevant training. Bioprocessing is a rapidly growing discipline that combines life sciences with engineering to define, develop and build biomanufacturing processes and operations for next generation biologics, of which the mRNA vaccine is a good example.
While the growth of bioprocessing and biologics is occurring in many areas nationwide, the greater Philadelphia area has been recognized as one of the largest Biopharma clusters in the country.
To address this need, Thomas Jefferson University has invested significantly in the Jefferson Institute for Bioprocessing (JIB) to provide industry focused hands-on and experiential training in all aspects of biotherapeutic process engineering with a focus on graduate level programs. Students gain valuable experience while working in the only academic end-to-end single-use pilot plant training facility in the United States.
Internship Opportunities:
JIB is currently seeking highly motivated students that are interested in contributing to the field through the completion of a hands-on internship. Through this opportunity, students gain valuable knowledge, experience and insight into the field while working in a team-based environment with highly experienced mentors with an option for Graduate students to earn transferable credits.
