Curriculum

Our residency program is designed to provide comprehensive exposure to core neurological diseases through various rotations and continuous clinical practice. Over the three years, residents participate in multiple hospital and ambulatory rotations and a weekly continuity clinic, which ensures consistent hands-on experience and patient interaction.

In their PGY-1 year, our residents receive comprehensive internal medicine training under the guidance of the outstanding Department of Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. This foundational year ensures that residents develop strong clinical skills and a broad understanding of internal medicine, which is essential for their subsequent training in neurology. In addition, our PGY-1 residents have 6 weeks of dedicated clinical exposure to multiple subspecialties across inpatient and outpatient neurology.

In addition to our core hospital-based rotations, we work hard to introduce PGY-2 residents to the breadth of neurology through multispecialty rotations and scheduled rotations in multiple ambulatory specialties. This early and diverse exposure helps residents build a strong foundation in neurology from the start and feel well-prepared for fellowship and career decisions.

Residents continue to benefit from a diverse array of neurologic subspecialties throughout their training and have the opportunity to explore a variety of electives as they advance to more senior years. This allows for personalized learning and the development of specialized skills.

As residents progress to the PGY-3 and PGY-4 years, they assume graduated responsibilities, taking on roles such as Ward and Stroke Senior Resident. This progressive increase in responsibility prepares our residents to become confident and capable leaders in neurology.

During training, residents will spend time at the following facilities:

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) – a 926-bed tertiary care hospital in central Philadelphia with 140-160 neurology inpatient neurology admissions/month; dedicated neurology wards service, 14 bed Neuro-intensive Care Unit, and 20 bed Intermediate Neuro Care Unit. This facility also serves as the primary inpatient center for the other departments of TJUH, resulting in a robust neurologic consultation service to help address the neurologic needs of patients admitted to other clinical specialty teams.

Honickman Center – The Honickman Center opened its doors to patients in April 2024 and serves as the primary ambulatory care facility for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The 19-story building has state of the art facilities for the delivery of outpatient neurologic care. Residents will see patients here during their outpatient neurology rotations as well as part of the resident continuity clinic scheduled weekly over the PGY2-4 years of residency.

Jefferson Hospital for Neurosciences (JHN) – JHN, a hospital dedicated to neurological and neurosurgical patient care and research, is located just two blocks from our main hospital. This facility supports a 28-bed Neuro-intensive Care Unit, 20-bed Intermediate Neuro-intensive Care Unit, 8-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, and a 21-bed Stroke Unit.

Nemours Children’s Hospital – a pediatric hospital located in Wilmington, Delaware with active inpatient and consultative service, including video EEG monitoring, and active outpatient subspecialty clinics including epilepsy, neuromuscular, and headache. This serves as the clinical site for our residents’ child neurology training.

Jefferson Headache Center at Methodist – a 16 bed Headache Unit run by the Jefferson Headache Center, in which neurology residents will spend 5 weeks of their residency managing complex headache cases. Residents will also spend time learning outpatient headache management at the Headache Center located at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
