Message from the Chair
Welcome to the department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. Our department has a long history of success in clinical care, education, research, and leadership. Founded in 1824, Thomas Jefferson Medical College is one of the nation’s oldest medical institutions. Many of the founding principles of our specialty were started right here at Thomas Jefferson in downtown Philadelphia, where several important thought leaders in the development of modern medicine called home. Our Anesthesiology residency was formed in 1960, making it one of the most established programs nationwide.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Periopertive Medicine is formed by the culmination of vibrant, dedicated, and fully integrated team members working towards the same mission of providing the highest quality patient care and educational services to the Thomas Jefferson community. From initial impression, it is clear this group of faculty, medical students, residents, fellows, and CRNA’s are driven to create and sustain a culture of support and mutual benefit. Our didactic and clinical educational programs are designed to foster the creation of intelligent and empathetic clinicians, while our clinical and basic science research endeavors promote the development of the clinician scientist of the future.
The Thomas Jefferson Health System is by far the largest in our region providing exceptional opportunities for learning. Our residents and students manage complicated patients with an extensive variety of surgical pathophysiology. Vast clinical case volumes and wonderful opportunities for collaboration with partnering specialties further promote the education and development of future anesthesiology consultants. In addition to our Residency program, we offer fellowship programs in Cardiothoracic, Regional/Acute Pain, Chronic Pain, Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric, and Liver Transplantation.
The Jefferson Health System has key core values; Put People First, Be Bold and Think Differently, and Do the Right Thing. That is the full embodiment of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. All members of the department promote a collective mindset to strive to maintain our excellence and focus on continual improvement. We always focus on our people and will always do the right thing, whether in reference to patient care, education, or research. Our world-class program has been built over decades of success and we continue to evolve to be ready for the future challenges to come. Thank you for exploring our website and please feel free to reach out with any questions.
