Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
Established in 1825, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is located in Center City Philadelphia, and currently has 908 licensed acute care beds. The university hospital is nationally ranked for a number of specialties, including orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology, cancer, and GI, among others. It is one of the few hospitals in the United States that is recognized as both a regional Level 1 Trauma Center and as a federally recognized regional Spinal Cord Injury Center.
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is the core hospital of the Jefferson orthopaedic residency. Orthopaedic attendings at Jefferson are comprised of the physicians of Rothman Orthopaedics and the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center.
Jefferson Methodist Hospital
Located in south Philadelphia, Methodist has 204 licensed acute care beds and is home to the Jefferson Shoulder and Elbow Center. Residents spend time here as PGY-3s and PGY-5s on Shoulder and Elbow, and PGY-4s on Hand Surgery with the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center.
Jefferson Torresdale Hospital
Located in northeast Philadelphia, Torresdale has 450 licensed acute care beds and is a busy Level 2 Trauma Center. Residents complete a PGY-5 trauma rotation here.
Bryn Mawr Hospital
Bryn Mawr Hospital is a 319-bed, not-for-profit, acute-care teaching hospital located in the Philadelphia suburb of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Main Line Health system. Its emergency department treats adult and pediatric patients, with staffing from Nemours pediatric ED attendings. Residents are based here for one PGY-1 rotation, one PGY-2 rotation, and two PGY-4 rotations, and also operate here during their PGY-3 Shoulder and Elbow, Sports, and Hand rotations. Weekly conferences supplement resident education. With its busy emergency room and 15+ Rothman orthopaedic attendings regularly operating at the main hospital and the adjacent Bryn Mawr Surgicenter, Bryn Mawr provides a diverse, high-volume, community experience for orthopaedic residents.
Riddle Memorial Hospital
Riddle Memorial Hospital is a 227-bed hospital located in the Philadelphia suburb of Media, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Main Line Health System. Residents spend time here, at both the main hospital and the adjacent surgery center, as PGY-3s on shoulder and elbow and hand rotations, PGY-4s on sports, and PGY-5s on shoulder and elbow and combo rotations.
Physicians Care Surgical Hospital
PhyCare is a surgical hospital with five operating rooms and 12 inpatient beds, located in the Philadelphia suburb of Royersford, Pennsylvania. Residents spend time here as PGY-2s on Foot and Ankle, and PGY-4s on Sports.
Rothman Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital
ROSH is a surgical hospital with six operating rooms and 24 inpatient beds, located in the Philadelphia suburb of Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Residents spend time here as PGY-2s on Joints and Spine, PGY-3s on Foot and Ankle, and PGY-5s on Sports, Joints, and Spine.
Pediatric Hospitals
Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
The Nemours Children's Hospital, located in Wilmington, Delaware, is a fully accredited, nonprofit, teaching facility operated by the Nemours Foundation. Founded in 1940, the hospital has 208 beds and serves as the pediatric affiliate hospital for Thomas Jefferson University. The 15 fellowship-trained surgical faculty cover the span of pediatric orthopedics, with subspecialists in pediatric orthopaedic oncology, spine surgery, hand surgery, lower extremity surgery, and sports surgery. In addition, it is the only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center in the state of Delaware.
Jefferson PGY-3s spend 14 weeks at Nemours alongside residents from several other programs. While on rotation, residents spend time in the emergency room, clinic, and operating room, learning about the diagnosis, decision making, treatment, and aftercare of the span of pediatric orthopedic problems. Education is supplemented by a robust daily conference schedule.
Shriner Children's Hospital
One of 22 locations around the world, Shriners Children's Hospital in Philadelphia serves patients from around the globe with orthopaedic and spinal pathologies. Residents spend 7-8 weeks here during their PGY-2 year, dividing this time between the upper extremity, lower extremity, and spine services, treating a breadth of pediatric conditions including neuromuscular disorders, arthrogryposis, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, nerve injuries, and limb length/angular deformities. Weekly service conferences supplement the standardized Jefferson curriculum.
