Fellowship Overview

Adult Epilepsy Fellowship Track

This is an ACGME-approved fellowship at an internationally renowned epilepsy center. We strongly recommend that candidates plan to complete two years of training (one year of fellowship in an ACGME Epilepsy fellowship; one year in an ACGME Clinical Neurophysiology fellowship). Candidates should apply through the match program to the Epilepsy Fellowship—adult track (no need to apply to both Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology fellowships), and, if accepted, a second year of fellowship will be arranged. The fellowship offers training in diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of epilepsy, along with instruction in EEG, video-EEG monitoring, use of intracranial electrodes (with a high volume of SEEG cases), intraoperative monitoring, brain mapping, and evoked potentials. Fellows have strong exposure and training in the selection of best surgical options in different clinical cases, including the use of resective surgery, deep brain stimulation, responsive neurostimulation, VNS, and thermal ablation treatments. There is a strong emphasis on clinical research and teaching from a multidisciplinary faculty. This fellowship is designed for individuals who wish to pursue academic careers. After completion, graduates will be eligible for both the ABPN clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy board certifications.

There is a robust didactics program, which includes a weekly multi-disciplinary epilepsy surgery conference, EEG conference, journal club, epilepsy/clinical neurophysiology weekly lecture series, research-oriented meetings, and fellow-led group discussion sessions. We also lead a monthly multi-institutional lecture series with invited external national and international lecturers. Fellows will obtain experience in clinical trials, treatment utilizing stimulation devices, and outpatient epilepsy care.

Pediatric Epilepsy Fellowship Track

This is an ACGME-approved fellowship consisting of a one-year training program at both Jefferson University Hospital as well as A.I. duPont Hospital for Children. The fellowship offers training in the diagnosis, medical management, and surgical treatment of epilepsy, along with instruction in EEG, video-EEG monitoring, use of intracranial electrodes, intraoperative monitoring, and brain mapping. There is strong clinical teaching from a multidisciplinary faculty at both Jefferson and duPont Hospitals. Dr. Stephen Falchek at A.I. duPont Hospital for Children serves as the fellowship site director, under the child neurology division leadership of Dr. Rodney Scott. This fellowship is designed for individuals who wish to pursue academic careers or practice in the community.

The A.I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE, serves as the primary training base for pediatric epilepsy fellows. Training at the duPont site includes inpatient and outpatient epilepsy evaluation and treatment, video-EEG monitoring, and educational conferences.

Trainees also rotate at the Jefferson University Hospital for education in adult epilepsy care and epilepsy surgery. Additionally, fellows will participate in joint multidisciplinary clinical care, surgical, and educational conferences at Jefferson, as noted above in the description for the adult epilepsy fellowship.

Adult Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Track

This is an ACGME-approved one-year fellowship designed to provide well-rounded training for individuals interested either in clinical practice or an academic career. This fellowship is geared towards individuals who are interested in primarily combining this fellowship (which is strongly EEG/epilepsy focused) with our one-year ACGME Epilepsy fellowship, for a total of 2 years of training, though a separate one-year fellowship is also available. Training is provided in EEG, EMG, evoked potentials, intraoperative monitoring, video-EEG monitoring, and sleep, along with an outpatient neurology experience. Clinical experience is supplemented by a didactic lecture series. Fellows have an opportunity to participate in clinical research.

Pediatric Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Track

This is an ACGME approved one-year fellowship for graduates of child neurology residents.
