Cardiac Rotation

Fellows will rotate on the Adult Cardiac Surgery service at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital – Center City and Jefferson Abington Hospital during their PGY-6 and PGY-7 years.

Fellows are expected to become proficient in the preoperative workup, indications, and postoperative care of common adult cardiac conditions. They will review the case preoperatively with the attending and during the operative procedure will function as primary surgeons or first assistants depending on the complexity of the case and their ability to perform the case. They will see patients preoperatively and postoperatively in the hospital as well as in the outpatient clinics.

Fellows will interact with the cardiac surgery team, consisting of cardiac surgery attendings, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, surgical assistants, medical students, and perfusionists. Fellows will be required to attend all mandatory core curriculum conferences.

Fellows are expected to become proficient in the preoperative workup, indications, and postoperative care of common general thoracic conditions. They will review the case preoperatively with the attending and during the operative procedure will function as primary surgeons or first assistants depending on the complexity of the case and their ability to perform the case. They will see patients preoperatively and postoperatively in the hospital as well as in the outpatient clinics.

Fellows will interact with the thoracic surgery team, consisting of thoracic surgery attendings, pulmonary medicine attendings, medical oncology attendings, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Fellows will be required to attend all mandatory core curriculum conferences and any divisional conferences.

Congenital Rotation

Fellows will rotate on the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery service at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for 2 months during their PGY-7 year.

The rotation at CHOP strives to develop the Fellow’s necessary specialized skills to perform competently in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. These skills include a strong basic knowledge of complex congenital heart disease including its pathophysiology, embryology, morphology, and the surgical procedures applicable to each variant of each congenital heart defect. The rotation seeks to provide a strong education in preoperative diagnosis and assessment, cardiac critical care, and postoperative surgical management of children with congenital heart disease.

In addition to coursework in cardiac morphology, the Fellows are given an opportunity to learn cardiac catheterization diagnostic skills to enable them to appropriately calculate shunt calculations, cardiac output, and vascular resistances. They are exposed to a significant volume of echocardiography and other diagnostic modalities including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography.  The Fellow will also be expected to attend the various conferences during this rotation.
