Black Maternal Health Case
What is the Black Maternal Health Case?
The Team Care Planning Black Maternal Health scenario revolves around Melody Brown, a 30-year-old pregnant Black woman with a history of depression and a recent preeclampsia diagnosis. Melody and her partner meet with an interprofessional care team to discuss a birth plan. Melody’s partner wants her to deliver at home due to previous birthing trauma.
Before the simulation, students prepare by reading Melody’s patient record and scholarly articles published on the topic of health disparities in Black maternal health. On the day of the simulation, interprofessional student teams meet to discuss their recommendations for Melody and plan for the meeting with her and her partner. Then, students meet with Melody and her partner to develop a plan for care and address any questions or concerns. Upon completing the simulation, faculty facilitators lead a debrief of the encounter. Students then receive feedback from the standardized participants regarding their team performance.
