Return to Sport Case
What is the Return to Sport Case?
Team Care Planning Return to Sport scenario revolves around Joey Jackson, a 16-year-old high school student athlete who recently tore their ACL and had it repaired. While they have been medically cleared to return to active play, Joey’s parent is concerned about the risk of reinjury, while their coach is vocal about the need to return to the playing field.
Before the simulation, students prepare by reading Joey’s patient record and scholarly articles published on ACL tears and returning to play after ACL tear repairs. On the day of the simulation, interprofessional student teams discuss their recommendations for Joey based on their professional perspective and the team plans for a meeting with Joey, their parent, and their coach. Then, students conduct a meeting with Joey, their parent, and coach to develop a plan for care and address any questions or concerns. Upon completion of the simulation, faculty facilitators lead a debrief of the encounter. Finally, the standardized participants return to share their feedback as patient, parent, and coach with students.
