Department's Guide to Visa Sponsorship
B-1/B-2 & WB/WT Visitors
The applicants for B-1/B-2 visas should carefully review the instructions provided by the local U.S. consulate, as the visa application process and fee payment methods can differ depending on the location. Typically, the application will require:
A valid passport
Resume/CV
A completed DS-160 online visa application
- Proof of payment for the visa application fee
Recommended Evidence: As per the U.S. State government website,
- Purpose of your trip
- Your intent to depart the United States after your trip
- Your ability to pay all the costs of the trip
Invitation Letters
The hosting department will provide a signed invitation letter for all approved short-term visitors. This letter will include the nature and duration of your visit. Individuals from certain countries can visit for up to 90 days without a B-1/B-2 visa, as per the Visa Waiver Program by the U.S. Department of State. They should still carry their invitation letter to present upon entry to the U.S.

Inviting Family & Friends
If you are family but not a spouse or child of a Jefferson-sponsored visa holder, you will need a B-1/B-2 visitor visa to come to the U.S. Individuals from certain countries can visit for up to 90 days without this visa, as per the Visa Waiver Program by the U.S. Department of State.
Please review the detailed information under the Practical Documents & Resources section on inviting your family and friends.
