Spring Closing Information
The residence halls close at 10 am on Thursday, May 9, 2024. Please see below information, including our Closing Checklist and how to complete an Express Checkout.
Important Dates
- Friday, April 26, 2024: classes end.
- Sunday, April 28, 2024 at 8 pm: quiet hours begin and continue until the residence halls close.
- Monday, April 29, 2024 - Wednesday, May 1, 2024: reading/review days.
- Thursday, May 2, 2024: final exams begin.
- Wednesday, May 8, 2024: final exams end.
- Thursday, May 9, 2024: residence halls close at 10am.
Closing Dates & Times
All residents must vacate their room within 24 hours of their last exam. All residence halls close on Thursday, May 9 at 10 am. Late stays past 10am on May 9, 2024, cannot be accommodated. For students who need to stay past 10am on May 9, Kanbar will be open until 5pm.
Closing Checklist
To prepare for your checkout, please complete the following tasks:
- Attend your RA’s closing floor meeting.
- Clean, defrost, and unplug your microfridge. Place a towel under the front of your Microfridge to collect water during defrosting. Leave the microwave door open.
- Remove wall hangings, command hooks, and mirrors.
- Remove all belongings from your room.
- Return all university property to its original place.
- Double check all drawers and closets and underneath beds to make sure you did not leave any items.
- Please consider donating to local charities! Bins are located in residence hall lobbies from April 26 though May 7 (May 6 for Franklin residents).
- Clean your room - make sure to wipe hard surfaces and vacuum.
- Remove any stars/tape from the ceiling and walls and any tape/paint from windows.
- Take home your bicycle if you brought one to campus.
- Properly set the thermostat before leaving.
- Ronson, Mott, Fortess, Partridge, and Townhouse residents: set the thermostat to 65 degrees.
- Independence Plaza residents: turn off the bedroom units; set the living room to 65 degrees; ensure the unit is not blocked by personal items or furniture.
- Scholler residents: turn off units.
- Take any trash left in the room out to the dumpsters and take any recycling to recycling bins.
- Dumpsters arrive on April 26. For Ronson residents, trash closets will be locked beginning on April 26 - please use the dumpsters.
- Close and lock windows, and close drapes/blinds.
- Leave the closet, dresser and desk drawers open.
- Complete an Express Checkout. See below for more information.
Express Checkout
Once you have completed all the Closing Checklist items above and you are ready to leave:
- Fill out an Express Checkout envelope at the RHM desk. Townhouse residents will complete an Express Checkout at Scholler.
- Place your key into the envelope.
- Place the envelope with the key inside into the Express Checkout box located at the RHM desk.
- If you are not returning to the University, return your Jefferson ID in the Express Checkout envelope.
Please be aware of the following costs:
- Not completing Express Checkout: $25
- Not returning key with Express Checkout: Cost of core change. We do not accept mail-in keys.
If you have lost your key, you will be charged for a core change, but you still need to complete an Express Checkout. Please write “missing key” under key code on the envelope.
Damages
- We encourage you to document the condition of your room when you leave. If you believe you have damages in your room, please take pictures and/or videos for your records and contact us at tju_ef_reslife@jefferson.edu.
- Residential Life staff will inspect rooms for damages. RAs do not make final determinations for damage charges. Charges, along with appeal instructions, will be communicated via Jefferson email. Charges vary based on severity and could range from $5-$225 for cleaning or $5-$3000 for damages to University property.
Abandoned Property
- Unclaimed items will be considered abandoned and disposed of after 24 hours. Students will be billed for the actual cost of the removal. Please see our Abandoned Property policy for more information.
Guests, Parking, & Security
- Students should follow the guest policy as written if others are assisting with moving out. Please plan accordingly.
- Parking regulations will be enforced for the remainder of the semester, including final exams week.
- Parking will provided in front of Ronson Hall and alarms will be deactivated in Mott and Fortess Hall during the times listed below. Please plan accordingly with your transportation.

- Monday, May 6, 2024: 12 pm-4 pm
- Tuesday, May 7, 2024: 12 pm-8 pm
- Wednesday, May 8, 2024: 9 am-7 pm
- Independence Plaza gates will be open for moving out during the times listed below. Please plan accordingly with your transportation:
- Saturday, May 4, 2024: 10 am-6 pm
- Sunday, May 5, 2024: 10 am-6 pm
- Monday, May 6, 2024: 12 pm-8 pm
- Tuesday, May 7, 2024: 12 pm-8 pm
- Wednesday, May 8, 2024: 10 am-10 pm
- Thursday, May 9, 2024: 7 am-10 am
- The risk of theft increases during finals as residents are moving out. Please be sure to always lock your room and never leave valuable belongings unattended. Report any issues to Public Safety at 215-951-2999.
- Failure to vacate your housing assignment within the prescribed period shall result in an hourly fine, in which case the University shall not be responsible for student belongings and reserves the right to confiscate and dispose of such belongings beginning 48 hours after a student's scheduled check-out time.
- Carts and hand trucks will not be provided during move-out.
